How do you Choose a Class and Level?

Whether you are new to dance or if you have had some experience, choosing the right class may be confusing. Here at the Allegro Ballroom, we offer a variety of styles and levels, designed to take you from your first steps on the floor to a level of accomplishment you have only dreamed about.

To get started, the first point is: which style? There are three styles of dances to choose from:

The American Style Program includes 12 traditional Ballroom and Latin dances, and is where most people begin their dance training. Classes are designed to get you moving and build your skills to become a well-rounded, comfortable social dancer.

The International Style Program includes 5 "Standard" and 5 "Latin American" dances. It is known for its strong emphasis on technique and its highly stylized form, and is mostly used for competition and exhibition dancing. It is recommended that students have a good foundation in social dancing before moving into the International Style.

Our Contemporary Dance Program offers today's popular dances such as Argentine Tango, the Lindy Hop, Nightclub 2-Step, West Coast Swing, Hustle and Salsa. Many dance movies, TV commercials and clubs have helped to create a great interest in these specialized dances.

After selecting the style of dance, the next consideration is: what level?

Both American and International Styles use a grading system of Bronze, Silver and Gold levels to track your learning and develop your skills. Newcomers should choose a beginning Bronze level class to start, and progress through the levels on a monthly basis for each dance. Those with prior experience may start at a higher level, but please check with the instructor to be sure that the level is correct for you.

When choosing one of the Contemporary dances, generally the first class of the evening is for beginners, and the second class is at an intermediate or higher level. It is always a good idea to start with a lower level class and consult with the instructor to adjust the level if necessary.

We hope this gives you a good understanding of our programs and levels. If you have questions, please feel free to contact us.

Happy Dancing!
